He moved to Des Moines and lived in the Drake University neighborhood where it was by chance he met the late Dr. R. Wright invited Don into his classes to speak about his life and students were amazed and inspired by his life story. Throughout the years he shared his life story with more than 4,000 students and health care workers.
Each year at Thanksgiving Don would open his home and made a large Thanksgiving meal (including his famous republican beans) for those who may have otherwise gone without. Don was a great friend to many.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Rodney, Raymond, Harold and Duane; and one sister, Annette (Davis) Bowman.
