Margaret Jessen, 94, of rural Dakota City passed away Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at Regency Square Care Center in South Sioux City, following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at St. Cornelius Catholic Church in Homer, NE, followed by a luncheon at the American Legion Hall in Homer. Private burial will be at a later date in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. on Monday, February 26, 2018 at Mohr Funeral Home in South Sioux City.
Margaret Jessen was born November 2, 1923, in rural Willis, Dakota County, Nebraska to Edward and Mary Cathrin O'Shaughnessy. Following graduation from Homer High School, Margaret joined the United States Marines during World War II. She attained the rank of corporal and was stationed at the Marine Air Corps Station at El Toro, California from 1944-1946. After the war she returned to work as a linotype operator for the local newspaper.
On December 4, 1947, she married Alfred Jessen in Dakota County. The couple farmed for several years in Dakota County. She was later employed by Iowa Beef Processors for nineteen years, retiring in the mid-1970s.
Margaret is survived by her sons and their wives: Leon and Janice of Dakota City; Rick and Karan of Yutan, Nebr; Randy and Kathy of Hubbard; her daughters-in-law, Jenise (John) Jessen of San Antonio, Texas and Terry (Jim) Jessen of Sioux City; her sister Helen Howard of Emerson; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred; a sister, Mary and brothers, Frank and Edward; her sons John and Jim; and her grandchildren Abby and Shawn.
